Philanthropy and Voluntarism

While donations to charitable organizations are declining, voluntarism continues to rise across the nation. According to Giving and Volunteering in the United States 2001 by Independent Sector, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the work of the philanthropic sector, nearly half of U.S. adults volunteer time at least once a year to nonprofit organizations.

Youth Volunteers Continue to Give as Adults

There are few things more joyous than watching young people “turn on” to the power of giving back to their communities through volunteering. A new study shares the good news that once the light is switched on, it stays on. According to the study, adults who volunteered in their youth give more money and volunteer more time than adults who started their philanthropic involvement later in life.

Produced by the Independent Sector and Youth Service America, the report also discusses the increasing trend of youth voluntarism over the past fifty years and provides recommendations for overcoming barriers to youth involvement.
